Building a Gonk Droid for Halloween: Part 1
I decided to do a Mandalorian-themed display for Halloween this year, and as part of that, decided I wanted a droid. Easiest droid I could think of to do (and I looked all over Etsy and the web for full-size droids, and they're not cheap) was a Power Droid. Now, a while back, I'd run across this post, and, well, it gave me ideas.
Step 1: Shopping
First stop was Home Depot, where we got a DIY droid kit:
Those bins are really handy for carrying everything out of store, lemme tellya:
Step 2: Feet and Legs
The first real construction step was to bolt up mounts for the PVC legs. That necessitated a quick trip back to the store when I discovered that my original plan to use molly bolts in the ends of 3/4" PVC pipe was a total bust.
So, back to the store, get end caps and 3" bolts, and BOLT the end caps onto the body and feet, respectively.
That didn't turn out half bad! So, how about a test fit of all the leg elements?
And lets throw the other tub on top, and get a feel for things.
Lastly, I need to start gluing L brackets to the dryer hose we'll be using as "pants" for the legs to get the right Star Wars look.
The idea here is glue the L brackets into the hose, then screw threw the other side to attach to the top and bottom, holding everything in place.
Step 3: Color?
While I was waiting for things to glue up, I decided to start shooting some paint on the main pieces, to get them a base coat.
